Individual Support

As we pursue the flourishing of the people of God through reimagined relationships with God, ourselves, and others, there are times we need a personal companion to walk with us. To explore. To seek understanding. To create an opportunity to revisit and rework our stories. To be a brave partner with whom we can try new ways of engaging.

At Church Well Co we provide three distinct expressions of personal companionship on the brave journey of flourishing: Therapeutic Guidance, Professional Mentorship, and Spiritual Direction.

Therapeutic Guidance

Christian Counseling, the ChurchWellCo way.

  • Therapeutic Guidance (TG) is our take on what is traditionally called Christian Counseling. It is a clinically informed, spiritually rooted, and pastorally guided experience through which we attend to the places of pain present in our lives, work through challenges in our relationships, and find the courage to step forward into new things and the integration of our whole selves.

  • It is called Therapeutic Guidance because of the integrated nature of our approach It is:

    • Therapeutic in the way we pay attention to the pain in our lives and stories, integrate our experiences, and find meaning in our lives,

    • Pastoral in the way we attend to the presence of God past, present and future, and

    • Guidance in the way we are attentive to the opportunities for healing, growth, and forward movement.

    • Guides: Our Therapeutic Guides are clinically trained Christian counselors with pastoral experience.

    • Available for: Therapeutic Guidance is available for both individuals and couples.

    • Cost: Ranges from $105-150/session depending on the Guide

    • Frequency: based upon need. Therapeutic Guidance is available as a stand-alone sessions (to navigate a specific issue), a 8-10 session series (to work through something more complicated), or in an ongoing manner as companionship on your path of life.

    • Disclaimer: While all of our Therapeutic Guides are educated and clinically trained as counselors, Therapeutic Pastoral Guidance is not therapy. It does not diagnose or treat mental health disorders nor is it appropriate for working through recent or active trauma. It is a process designed to facilitate emotional, relational, and spiritual healing through deep attentiveness, meaning making, and exploration of story and experience.

Professional Mentorship

There are times where we do not need a counselor, but we do need more than a friend.

  • We may need a place where a specific part of ourselves can be engaged intentionally. Or we may need a space for our whole selves and full story to welcomed and seen so that we can make new meaning and to find the keys to unlock the doors before us. Professional Mentorship seeks to bridge that gap.

  • Professional mentorship is designed to sit in a deeply relational context with intentionality and focus. Unlike therapy or spiritual direction, where the professional limits the use of themselves or their story, professional mentorship creates room for a type of exchange of relationship to the benefit of the mentee. Professional mentorship can focus on professional or personal areas, each of which create a different feel to the experience:

    • For some, professional mentorship focuses on specific spaces in life (marriage, ministry, friendship, etc.). This expression can feel more along the lines of coaching or professional consultation.

    • For others, professional mentorship is a relationship in which to share our stories intentionally and to process our experiences in the presence of care, wisdom, and attentiveness. This form will take the shape of what we more traditionally identify as mentorship.

  • Mentors: Professional mentorship through Church Well Co is currently only being offered by BrianJames McMahon.

    Cost: $150/session

Frequency: based on need and mentor’s availability

Disclaimer: Professional is not therapy. It does not diagnose or treat mental health disorders nor is it appropriate for working through recent or active trauma. It is mentorship relationship in which to engage personally or professionally for growth.

Spiritual Direction

“An interpersonal relationship in which we learn how to grow, live, and love in the spiritual life.” - Richard Foster

  • Spiritual Direction is a process rooted in relationship through which a trained spiritual guide listens to and companions someone who desires a deeper relationship with God. For those who identify as Christians, this means becoming more like Jesus. Richard Foster, a Christian theologian and author defined spiritual direction as “an interpersonal relationship in which we learn how to grow, live, and love in the spiritual life.”

  • Spiritual direction is not counseling, friendship, mentoring, teaching nor discipling. It is the commitment to discover what God is doing in a person’s life and to help that person come closer to Christ.

    • Role of Spiritual Director: The spiritual director is trained to listen, discern and sometimes ask questions. The task of the spiritual director is to diligently pay attention to the person’s story and the Spirit, and to encourage spiritual growth.

    • Director Training: Each of our Directors is trained in the practices of spiritual direction in addition to their training and experience pastoring.

    • Cost: $50-120/session

    • Frequency: Typically monthly, though can be more frequent if needed

  • Disclaimer: Professional is not therapy. It does not diagnose or treat mental health disorders nor is it appropriate for working through recent or active trauma. It is mentorship relationship in which to engage personally or professionally for growth.

Rev. James Knight
Spiritual Director

  • James Knight is an ordained pastor and a trained spiritual director. In both spaces, James seeks to be present with people in ways that fosters growing attentiveness and responsiveness to Jesus.

It was during a difficult season of unanticipated transition and confusion that James heard the Spirit say, “I did not call you to the tasks of ministry, I called to you myself!” While the roles in James’ life did not change, that invitation caused a deep heart shift in James as he began the journey of living into his identity as the Beloved of God. It is a life that desires to be lived out of God’s love, not one of striving for it. The gift of receiving spiritual direction has been a central component of this journey. It is a gift that James now delights in offering to others, especially fellow ministry leaders.

James holds a bachelor’s from Northpoint Bible College, an M.Div. from Ashland Theological Seminary, and a two-year certificate in Spiritual Direction from The PAX Center for Spiritual Formation. He lives in Millbury, MA. James currently co-pastors a church with his wife in the nearby town of Uxbridge. Together with their two boys they love hiking, traveling all over New England (and beyond) and connecting with their friends, family, and community.
